The Dog Catchers Are Out Again...

We kind of knew that the lull in catching would be a temporary one. What we didn't realise was that 60 dogs would be brought in last week, in just 48 hours. The public shelter has filled up so fast. Three mums with pups are amongst them and some motherless pups too. The good news is that we can still take all the dogs that we can manage. Also two dogs have been adopted by local people this weekend, and one man was reunited with his lost dog after Gea recognised one dog from a

    A Blood Bank for Dogs

BMDR were delighted to be invited for some of our dogs to take part in a blood donation scheme for dogs run by Bucharest Veterinary Surgeons Hemopet.  This was held at Certovet, our own verterinary surgeons in Navodari, Constanta. Dogs need transfusions of healthy blood for many reasons. In Romania, road accidents and disease are all too common. The BMDR heroes of the day were: Fyne, Oscar, Pasha, Ted and Tom. They were all tested for erlichia, anaplasma, heartworm (dirofilar

Ten Pallets of Aid are on Their Way

Donated aid from wonderful dog lovers in all four corners of the UK converged in Wiltshire a few weeks ago. This was sorted and packed onto pallets for dispatch to Romania. Puppy and adult food, crates, beds, buckets, bedding, poopscoops, toys and so much more left this Friday for a week in transit to Deva, in Eastern Romania. From Deva internal transports will take it onwards to various destinations. There is a pallet each for Aurelia in Craiova, Mariana in Bucharest, Coca i

A busy week for fixing bones...

This week has seen two more dogs and two more cats having surgery and coming home to our care in Constanta. For all complex operations, we use an excellent husband and wife team at Trauma Vet. Iustin and Elena Girea in Bucharest offer excellent veterinary care and experience for the most complex of cases. It does mean a very long road trip for our overstretched team in Constanta though. It is 460 kms round trip - 286 miles. There was a wee kitty who they had found hit by a ca

The Day We Found a Hoarding Shelter

It was a terrible shock, the first day our team went to investigate stories of starving dogs in a private house in Constanta. 138 dogs (now the official count) crammed in, emaciated and starving had been taken in over years by someone who tried to help, but in the end, hadn't the means to care for them. We have called it the SOS Shelter. The First Few Days Nothing could have prepared us for what we found We immediately sent in food and daily the team worked hard the first wee
